High speed data logging

Blink of an eye

As part of understanding a client’s combustion engine issues, we developed a hardware and software solution to measure in-cylinder pressure. As part of this kit, we developed a data logging system capable of 750kHz to be able to log each cylinder, firing up to fifty times every second. The measured data was then exported and combined with a dynamic mechanical simulation to predict the internal stresses in the conrod during combustion.

“…log each cylinder, firing up to fifty times every second.”

The images here show a series of engine firings over ten seconds at two engine load points logged at 750kHz. The next images show a normal firing at 100bar peak pressure and a following image showing both pre ignition giving rise to a peak pressure of 150bar coupled with knock, or ringing, in the pressure signal.
